The Mason County Historical Society opened Historic White Pine Village in 1976. It is a community of over twenty-five buildings/sites dedicated to preserving and presenting Mason County's history. The buildings contain thousands of artifacts that help interpret their setting in the history of the area. Historic White Pine Village has been visited by tens of thousands of visitors and most comment upon leaving about the beauty and nostalgia of the village. The credit for this must go to the over 400 annual volunteers who do a wide variety of tasks. The history interpreted by Historic White Pine Village includes lumbering, music, farming, small rural villages, maritime, and the development of business and industry, to name a few. Come visit us, and rediscover small-town Michigan life in the late 1800's and beyond. There are things to see, things to learn, things to do - things that make Historic White Pine Village an exciting and educational experience for the entire family. Historic White Pine Village is host to over 400 area fourth graders each year with the popular and educational One Room School Experience. The students experience a day of school as it might have been some 100 years ago. They learn the 3 R's, play games their great grandparents might have played, and tour the village to learn of the local history it tells. In addition to the One Room School Experience, several thousand-school students come each spring and fall to tour Historic White Pine Village. In the fall, many senior groups come to tour, making it truly a place "Where History Lives".
