Coles General Store

Coles General Store
The second of three log building on the grounds of White Pine Village is called Cole’s General Store. This log cabin was the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Clay Cole. Mr. Cole was known as the Grand Old Man of Summit Township, moving to Mason County in 1867 and served for forty years on the county board of supervisors from Summit Township. He also served two terms as sheriff of Mason County. The building was moved to White Pine Village in 1975, with additional logs for reconstruction being found around the county. The log building then became a replica of an early mud-chinked log cabin known as a General Store. There were soaps and spices, salt and saleratus, dishes, books and dry goods on the shelves. Coles General Store Hardware and leather goods shared floor space with barrels of flour, sugar, and molasses. Axes, log chains, kettles, pots, pans, kegs of nails were piled in corners or hung from the rafters on cords. Shoes were piled loose in the big shoe box, saddles and harnesses added to the variety. Pins, pens, paper, buttons and collars, black silk gloves and palm leaf fans were always around somewhere.
