The Mason County Historical Society is at a crossroads, looking at many new and
wonderful opportunities and projects in their future. In this issue of the
Ludington Daily News you will find a copy of the History Happenings, the
Historical Society’s newsletter. In the newsletter an opportunity is given to
everyone to be a part of the future of the Mason County Historical Society by
becoming a member, making a donation, joining the new Business Partner program,
or volunteering. By doing so, you will be a part of the exciting future ahead
for the organization responsible for preserving and presenting the history of
all of Mason County. In this the 150th anniversary year of Mason
County, what better way to show your interest and support of our county’s
history than to become a member or make a donation to the Mason County
Historical Society, which operates Historic White Pine Village.
We would like to remind everyone that the Mason County
Historical Society and Historic White Pine Village has operated without any
tax support since 1990, relying totally on memberships, donations, and
admission fees for the bulk of their revenue. During this time many
improvements have been made and programs maintained. For example, last October
1st, Historic White Pine Village held one of six annual History In
Action Days with nearly 1100 students, chaperones, and volunteers on the
grounds, making it the best attended education day ever. The One Room School
Experience continues to be a part of the memories of area fourth graders, now
reaching the next generation of children who attended many years ago. Special
events continue throughout the summer and fall, the chapel is used often for
weddings, and our tour/lunch package is gaining popularity. All year long, the
comprehensive Research Library is used for Mason County research by visitors
and those who e-mail requests.
Opportunities before us include, converting the former U.S.
Coast Guard Station into a Port of Ludington Maritime Museum, housing the Mason
County Sports Hall of Fame at Historic White Pine Village, and relocating and
greatly enhancing our Lumber Museum and Lumbering Exhibits. Other projects
include the writing of a book on the schools of Mason County, the enhancement
of the barn and agricultural displays, and improvements to our web site.
