The blacksmith shop is a reproduction of the Custer Blacksmith Shop. The equipment
came from the shop of the late Abe Nelson and from a shop located in Pentwater. The
Pentwater Blacksmith Shop equipment was donated by Jerome Jorissen. This was one of
the first buildings constructed to create White Pine Village. The chestnut tree next to the
Blacksmith Shop was donated from a resident of Scottville.
Like other smiths - coppersmith, silversmith, gunsmith, etc. - the blacksmith specializes
in working with wrought iron. Because he works with iron that is comparatively dull or
dark in appearance, he is aptly called a "blacksmith". This term differentiates him from
the whitesmith or tinsmith, who works with tin-plated iron.
